BOX TOPS
Our box top campaign is going great!!  Keep them coming as each one is worth 10 cents to the school. We received a check for $149 this week and sent in another $160 worth, bringing our total to 5,460 box tops (or $546) for this school year! The 5th grade class is retaining its lead with 1,020 box tops to date! Please note that some of the box tops are expiring in June so we need to get those in so we can send them off before the expiration date comes in effect. Ask your family and friends for box tops, too - thanks for your assistance!!
CLASSROOM NEWS
TENOKI
All the children are enjoying each other’s company – they have learned to play so well together.

We are having so much fun putting together a book of colors.  Each day we are incorporating discussions about colors and shapes during center time, circle time or playtime.  We are also using our hands, fingers and feet to paint and collage the pages in our books.

Since we know so much, we also used some sponge letters from the English and Hebrew alphabet.  We are so proud of all our projects.  Tenoki is the place to be!!!

2ND GRADE GENERAL STUDIES
The second graders have been keeping busy this spring!  They have become quite confident in reading chapter books.  After some excellent book discussions on The Magic Treehouse Twister on Tuesday, The Magic Finger, Triplet Trouble, and Flat Stanley, we have moved onto a class discussion of Freckle Juice.  We are anxiously reading through the story to see if the main character is able to get freckles. Don’t be surprised if you see some new freckles on the second graders this week!

In Science we have been testing what sticks to magnets and what does not. We have learned that not all metal things are attracted to magnets! You will have to ask the second graders what has to be in an item in order for it to be attracted to a magnet.

The class has been trying to figure out if I am having a boy or a girl for the past nine months. Now that they are studying probability, they have a better understanding of the chances of the baby being a boy or a girl. We have had a lot of fun exploring probability and seeing what the chances are in certain events. We now know when things can be certain or impossible, likely or unlikely. We will have to wait and see if they guessed the correct gender for my baby!
Speaking of babies, I would like to introduce Cherie Null. She will be taking over for me during my maternity leave.  She comes with high recommendations and many years of experience. I know the class will be in good hands!! I appreciate all of the warm wishes that you have given me and will miss seeing everyone’s smiling faces while I am gone.

6TH GRADE GIRLS JUDAIC STUDIES PESACH SHENI/YUD DALED IYAR…..AND THE SIXTH GRADE GIRLS
Sixth grade girls enjoyed a Kosher L’Pesach Brunch of shmura matzah, etc. as they reflected on the significance of Pesach Sheni. The girls learned and then taught the school the many “facts and feelings” that are an intrinsic to this special day by adorning the front hall with their wisdom:
  • Pesach Sheni teaches us:  It is never too late!
  • Pesach Sheni is a time of reflection and tshuvah
  • If you have been “too far away,” you can always “come closer” to Hashem
  • Hashem believes in second  chances
  • Pesach Sheni…it works…because Hashem said so!
  • Bnai Yisrael wanted  the mitzvah
  • etc, etc

CHUMASH
The sixth grade girls are delving into their new Parsha of Kee Tissah.  The students are now quite proficient at translating new, unseen verses of the Torah.  Their ability to analyze psukim and offer logical responses to text difficulties is also astounding.  Self- assessment provided such comments as, “I love to translate on my own now” and “I really improved at this skill.”  We even suggested keeping a log of “Parshanut of the sixth grade girls!”

NAVI
Upon learning of the tragic destruction of Nov, a city of kohanim in Shmuel Aleph, the class compared and contrasted the destruction of Amalek to the Nov tragedy. Based on their own comparisons, the students then offered conclusions that reflect a real depth of understanding.

Examples:
  • When one believes himself to be more merciful than G-d, one will ultimately be devoid of mercy when it is truly called for.
  • A person must control their emotions, not have their emotions control them.
  • A leader must not be led by its people, rather he must set the standard.
  • Introspection/and self-awareness is imperative piece of Torah living.
