Many children struggle in the classroom and beyond because of a learning disability or exceptional ability. These problems may manifest themselves in a number of ways: poor test performance, difficulty telling time, poor motor coordination, slowness in completing work, difficulty with reasoning or problem solving, poor memory or inappropriate or impulsive behavior. Other children struggle in the classroom because they are gifted and talented in academic areas, and are not challenged by academic instruction with their peers.
Left untreated, children with learning disabilities and gifted abilities may sustain emotional and psychological problems. However, with appropriate intervention, they can thrive in the classroom and go on to lead productive and successful lives.
EHA recognizes children's individual needs and provides a wide range of programs and services to address them, including the following:
- an on-site student success coordinator who works with administration, teachers, students and parents to achieve targeted solutions
- classroom observations/consultations with staff
- Care Team meetings with staff and families to address individual needs and create student support plans
- study skills classes for students
- professional development for teachers
Our teachers are trained in Differentiated Instruction to meet the needs of diverse learners on an individual basis. They participate in on-going professional development sessions on this and other topics to reinforce training.
Our Middle School offers an advanced math track for accelerated learning.
We offer Title I Services in remedial reading and math to children who qualify under federal guidelines.
We retain the Jewish Family and Children’s Services (JFCS) of St. Louis counselors for on-site consulting services. Smadar Shenhav (MA, LCP) and Simon Koski (MEd, LCP, NCC) work part-time at our school, providing individual and group counseling when needed.
We work cooperatively with Ohr Atid (Light of the Future) educators, who work daily with children at EHA to enable inclusion in the classroom for children with disabilities, providing one-on-one support.
We work with Special School District (SSD) to offer evaluations and follow-up to EHA students regarding specific learning disabilities.
We have an occupational therapist on campus. Tziona Zeffren (OTR/L), owner of Therapy Works for Kids, works on-site on a part-time basis to assist teachers and provide individual therapy (on a fee basis).
At EHA, each child is a star, and we are committed to working with each one to ensure that s/he shines brightly. If you are a parent and would like to learn more about these services, please contact Heather Douek, our Student Success Coordinator at 373-7531.
