KIPPOT NEEDED!
Do you have any extra kippot at your house? We are running low on kippot here at EHA, and would appreciate it if parents who have kippot they can spare would bring them in, to provide to children who lose theirs. Thank you!

SECOND GRADE CHUMASH
In the s pirit of the chesed of Avraham Avinu, Morah Chanie's 2nd graders "planted" an "eshel" (tamarisk) tree in the EHA front hall! Guests were invited to sit under the tree and partake of acheela (food) and shtiya (drink). Upon being thanked, the second graders taught their guests about Hashem, who owns the world! "Don't thank me, thank Hashem!" was the chant of the day. With Avraham and Sarah as role models, the second graders then did the mitzvah of levaya - escorting guests to their destination. yashar kochachem second graders...tizku l'mitzvot!

FIFTH GRADE GENERAL STUDIES
In Math, we have been delving deeper into fractions and exploring exponential numbers.
In Science, we are working on a unit on weather. We have been data mining weather patterns over select time periods on http://weatherspark.com.
In Language Arts, we have been reading books such as Francine Fribble Proofreading Police, Nothing Ever Happens on 90th Street, and A. Lincoln and Me. These books have helped us to develop effective writing strategies that include idea generation, organization, and the use of writing conventions. We are applying these strategies to write our own essays, including one about a famous person from American History and another based on observations of the (extra)ordinary staff at our school. Also, since we are studying the American Revolution in Social Studies, we wrote personal diaries about and letters to a person from that period.

SCRATCH PROGRAMMING
This trimester, several grades have worked with "Scratch" to create custom animations. Scratch was developed by researchers at MIT to enable young people to learn programming skills while having fun. The program incorporates "drag and drop" with programming commands to teach students logic and mathematical concepts, while expressing themselves. Ask your student what he/she created! You may download Scratch at www.scratch.mit.edu to your home computer, free of charge, for your young techie to work on over the summer!

RECYCLING FUNDRAISERS
On top of being fundraisers, these projects are good for the environment.
Epstein receives $2 to spend at Office Depot for each used toner cartridge we return. Bring in all your used toner cartridges, and drop them off in the box in the front hall, and we will exchange them for office/classroom supplies!
We are also collecting other types of USED ELECTRONICS, such as cell phones, iPods, computers, etc. which we will turn in to raise fund to buy new technology products from http://www.digitalwish.com/.
Epstein also collects paper to recycle for a fundraiser, through Abitibi.com. Our bright yellow and green paper bin is located in the parking lot, in front of Block Yeshiva Girls High School. Abitibi accepts office paper, junk mail, magazines, and posters, but not cardboard of any kind. Instead of throwing it in the trash or giving it away for free, bring in your paper to us! In May, we received a check for $17 for over 800 lbs. of recycling, saving 1.31 cubic yards in landfill space!

Multiply your Box Tops contribution!
Remember to continue looking for Box Tops and turn them in to the school office. Ask your friends and relatives to collect for us, too - EHA receives 10 cents for each one. We sent in a submission for $217.60 today! Thanks to all of our supporters, we have submitted $741 in Box Tops this year, exceeding our goal by almost 20%!!!
We collected 130 Box Tops so far in May - that's $13! Congrats to Gavin Kornblum, the May Box Tops raffle winner! Click here for a Box Top "turn-in" sheet.
