Admissions Policy
Preschool-First Grade:
Students entering preschool through first grade must turn the required age by August 1st. Tenoki students must have turned two (2) by August 1st, Nursery students must have turned three (3) by August 1st, Pre-Kindergarten students must have turned four (4) by August 1st, Kindergarten students must have turned five (5) by August 1st, and First Grade students must have turned six (6) by August 1st.
Under-aged Applicants:
Children who miss the cut-off date in Preschool will not be accepted. Kindergarten and First Grade students who miss the cut-off date can be granted an exception if their birthday is no later than October 1.
If the Kindergarten student’s birth date is between August 1st and October 1st, an exception is given only to students whose development would be in serious jeopardy, as determined by our Kindergarten teacher, if they did not enroll in our Kindergarten. Our Kindergarten teacher will interview the child, review the child’s records and speak with the child’s preschool teachers. On some occasions additional testing may be recommended. These tests would be administered by a professional testing agency or a child psychologist before an admission decision is made. The additional testing may include: mental ability, gross motor skills, fine motor skills, visual discrimination, auditory discrimination, emotional/social development, and language/speech development. The costs of these tests would be the responsibility of the parent.
Students entering first grade would follow the same guidelines as kindergarten unless they are already a student in Epstein’s Kindergarten.
Grandfather Clause:
Children currently enrolled in our classrooms whose birth dates, according to the new policy, would make them ineligible to be in their class, may, at the discretion of the Kindergarten teacher and Administration, be allowed to remain with their current class.
Purpose of Policy:
These guidelines were written in careful consideration of the impact that age and developmental readiness have on academic, social, and emotional success at each grade level.
